Deslove guides
Edit an SVG online in Aura, and keep an editable original.
Aura is the vector editor made by Deslove. You can open an SVG, select and edit its objects, change colours and reshape paths in a browser. Save an Aura project for future editing and export a separate SVG for the web or another vector tool.
For a designer updating a logo, icon or other vector artwork. The full workspace is best on a computer. Drawing tools and built-in examples can be tried without an account; opening your own files, saving and exporting requires sign-in.
Try the drawing tools without an account. Sign in to open your files, save and export.
1. Keep the source file and open the editor.
Make a copy of the original SVG before editing. Choose one small change for a first pass, such as changing a fill or adjusting a curve. Keep a reference view of the original so you can compare proportions, type and colour after import.
Open Aura in your browser. If you want to try the tools first, open an example from the Aura product page without signing in. To work with your own file, use the sign-in action inside Aura. If you have already drawn something as a guest, stay in the same browser and tab so Aura can return you to the draft after login.
2. Open the SVG and read the import report.
After signing in, choose File → Open file… and select the SVG. If you need to add artwork to a document you already have open, use File → Add SVG to document… instead. Save important changes in the current document before opening a different one.
Compare the imported result with the original and review the Import report. SVG files can contain paths, groups, embedded images, text, masks and effects; they do not all behave like a set of simple editable curves. If Aura reports unsupported features, keep the original and try a simpler SVG export from the source application.
3. Find the object you want to change.
Use the selection tool to select the artwork, and use Layers to inspect groups and individual objects. If several parts select together, check the group structure before changing anything. Hidden or locked layers can also explain why an element is hard to select.
Check what the selected object actually is. An embedded PNG or JPEG stays an image when it is placed in an SVG; opening the file does not turn its pixels into vector paths. If lettering is already outlined, you can reshape its paths, but you cannot simply edit it as a text string.
4. Change a fill or stroke on the selected object.
With the intended object selected, use the fill and stroke controls to change its colour. Fill colours the interior of a shape; stroke colours its outline. Check which control is active before applying a colour or a palette entry.
Start with one object and inspect the result. Applying a colour without a selection sets the colour for new objects, so it may not change the artwork you are looking at. For a logo with several parts, inspect each part and check that intentionally transparent or unfilled areas remain that way.
5. Reshape a path or update editable text.
For a vector path, choose the Node tool and select a node. Move the node to change the contour, or adjust its handles to change the curve. Make a small edit and compare the silhouette at a normal viewing size; adding more nodes is not always the best way to make a curve smoother.
If the object is editable text, use the text controls to change the wording and typography. Convert text to outlines only when you need to edit individual letter shapes. Outlined letters are no longer editable as text. Keep an Aura version with editable text before outlining or exporting.
6. Save an Aura project and a separate SVG copy.
Choose File → Save as… and save an Aura project (.aura) as your working source. This format keeps editable text, objects and document settings for Aura. Then use Save as… again and choose SVG for the copy you want to share or use on a website.
Aura exports text in SVG as vector outlines. The exported lettering can retain its shape, but it is not a substitute for an editable text source. Temporary recovery drafts are stored in the browser on the same device; they are not a cloud project library or a backup. Keep the downloaded .aura and .svg files in your own storage.
7. Check the exported file where it will be used.
Open the exported SVG in a browser or the application where you plan to use it. Check the crop, background, colours, curves and lettering against your intended result. For an icon, inspect it at its actual interface size as well as zoomed in.
If something changed, return to your Aura source and compare the affected object with the import report. Imported masks, effects and third-party formats can need extra review. Some web imports and exports use conversion on the Deslove server; the web edition is not an offline app. Do not assume every source file will make a lossless round trip.
A worked example
Example: recolour one part of an icon.
Use an icon you created, or open the editable icon example on the Aura product page to try the selection and colour tools. This exercise changes the artwork; it does not trace a raster image.
Goal
Change the folder icon’s fill while keeping its outline and proportions.
Method
Select the folder object in the canvas or Layers, check whether you selected the group or the individual path, and apply the new colour to Fill. Inspect Stroke separately before changing it.
Keep
Save an .aura source before further changes. With a signed-in account, export a separate .svg and open it in the browser to check that the fill changed and the outline is still visible.
If the whole picture changes
Undo and inspect the selection in Layers. You may have selected a group, or the source may contain a single embedded image rather than separate vector objects.
Before you finish
Before you share the SVG.
The original SVG is retained, and the exported copy has been checked in its destination.
The fill or stroke changed on the intended object, and masks, transparency and the crop still look right.
An .aura source is saved if I need to edit text or document settings later; exported SVG lettering is outlined.
Important files are downloaded to my storage rather than relying on a browser recovery draft.
Make one deliberate change, then verify it.
A small SVG edit is a useful way to learn selection, fills and paths. Keeping the source and checking the exported copy makes the next edit easier.
