Grainrad — ASCII art and retro effects for images and video

About this resource

Grainrad turns images and video into character-based, halftone and pixel-style graphics in the browser. It uses WebGPU and opens without registration; its creator Alim explicitly describes the tool as free. It is a useful place to explore retro treatments for your own material. Input options include PNG, JPG, GIF, MP4, WebM and GLB files, plus a webcam source. Effects include ASCII, Dithering, Halftone, Matrix Rain, Dots, Contour, Pixel Sort, Blockify, Threshold, Edge Detection, Crosshatch, Wave Lines, Noise Field, Voronoi and VHS. ASCII controls cover character scale, spacing, output width and character sets. General adjustments include brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, sharpness, gamma, background color and intensity, allowing the treatment to be tuned to a particular image or clip. Export choices include PNG, JPEG, GIF, MP4, SVG, plain text and Three.js HTML. Availability depends on the selected effect: the official changelog specifies that Three.js export is limited to ASCII. Check the required output format with your own source before final production. Grainrad can help with posters, covers, video inserts and texture experiments built around characters, dots and digital distortion. Free access does not grant rights to third-party source images, so use material you are entitled to publish.

Usage and licensing

Free access is confirmed on the official About page. No explicit public license for the code or generated output was found on the reviewed pages; open-source status and unrestricted commercial rights are not verified. Users remain responsible for rights to source material.
