Letterbox turns text into a typographic composition: each large letter is assembled from many smaller characters. Created by designer and developer Charlie Clark, it is a visual playground rather than a library of downloadable fonts. Enter text and choose a typeface, style and weight. You can then adjust the size and case of the fill characters, fill mode, column count, background and foreground colours. Changing these settings reveals how readable letterforms can become intricate textures. The tool runs in a browser without an account. Composition settings are stored in the URL, so you can share a variation with a link. It is useful for exploring typographic ideas and finding inspiration for posters, covers and experimental headlines.
The tool is free and requires no account. A separate public commercial-use licence for outputs was not found; clarify terms with the creator when needed and check the chosen font's licence.
