Metaflop is a free open-source web application for creating and modifying parametric typefaces. Built on Metafont, it allows designers to customize fonts without writing code by simply adjusting sliders and numeric parameters directly in the browser. The Modulator includes controls for unit width, pen width, cap height, x-height, ascender and descender height, horizontal and vertical proportions, contrast, slanting, aperture, corner, overshoot, taper and other typographic parameters. Changes update the glyph shapes, which can be previewed in glyph, chart and typewriter views. Metaflop includes several base Metafont models that can generate a wide range of font variations. Finished results can be downloaded as OpenType PostScript fonts (.otf) or as webfont packages for use on websites. The tool is especially useful for type designers, graphic designers, students and anyone interested in parametric type design, font anatomy or quickly generating a custom typeface variation without using a complex font editor.
All outline-based fonts generated with Metaflop are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 and may be used freely, including commercially. Metaflop and its Metafont source code are licensed under GNU GPL v3.0.
