Archives.design — Digital Archive of Historic Graphic Design

About this resource

Archives.design is an independent digital archive of graphic design-related material available through Internet Archive. The collection is compiled and curated by designer Valery Marier as a personal non-commercial project. The archive brings together historic design material from different decades, including books, annuals, brand guidelines, editorial publications, posters, ephemera, educational documents, type specimens, interactive design and information graphics. Examples include the AIGA Graphic Design Annual 1990, Apple Human Interface Guidelines from 1987, IBM Brand Identity Guide 2003, historic type catalogs, airline travel posters, early Apple promotional material, typography books and many other rare documents. Each item has its own page with date, location, creator or organization, a short description, language and additional metadata. The original material can then be opened directly on archive.org. The collection can be explored through categories including Annuals, Editorial, Branding, Ephemera, Books, Education, Posters, Type Specimens, Interactive and Information. Availability labels also indicate whether an item is always available, borrow only or stream only. Archives.design is especially useful for graphic and brand designers, typographers, students and researchers who want to study original historical design material rather than only modern reinterpretations.
