Penpot

About this resource

Penpot is built for interface design, interactive prototypes, and design systems. It is open source and works with web standards including SVG and CSS. The platform is useful for designers and developers who want to discuss visual decisions alongside the structure of their eventual implementation. You can work with vector elements, components, shared libraries, and design tokens. CSS Grid and Flex layouts help define how an interface should behave instead of only positioning elements on a fixed canvas. These tools support reusable foundations across related screens and products. For a first project, build a few connected screens with shared typography, colours, buttons, and repeated components. Review the transitions in a prototype and discuss the structure with a developer. This makes a more informative exercise than designing a single decorative screen in isolation. The Professional cloud plan is free and includes core design tools. Storage, team size, and version history still have limits. Paid plans expand collaboration and administration capabilities. Self-hosting is also available, but running and maintaining your own infrastructure can introduce separate costs. Penpot’s software is released under MPL-2.0. That licence does not automatically cover every third-party template, font, or image you import. Check those assets separately, and agree on delivery formats and implementation needs before handing a project over.
